Elvis performed live in only one other county besides the U.S., and that was Canada—and all his appearances were in 1957. His second of only three concert venues was in Ottawa on April 3, 1957. The young star was already a controversial figure because of his gyrations, and while many fans flocked to see him from as far away as Montreal, many were also forbidden to attend the show. Nearly 500 fans packed a train dubbed the “Rock N’ Roll Cannon Ball” to make it to the show, and while students from the Notre Dame Convent school attended despite their restriction, they were expelled. Elvis took the stage in his gold lamé jacket to adoring screams from fans; so loud were the shrieks of ecstasy at seeing their idol, Elvis could barely be heard above the noise. The Ottawa Journal captures what had the town so concerned in their article titled, “16,000 See Elvis In Ottawa Shows” with the description, “With what might look like, but definitely isn’t, a shyly downcast glance of embarrassed modesty, he leans lovingly into his hoochy-cooch. He even bats his big, brown, long-lashed eyes before he goes all aquiver and the girls start screaming so loud they can’t hear him sing.” However, they expel the fears just a few sentences later, “The rumors that his gyrations might generate a teenager terror of rioting hysteria turned out to be so much smoke from the hokum-pipes of the Presley publicists.” The fans in Ottawa went crazy for their idol, but in an orderly fashion that made his popularity endure for our Northern neighbors. Offered are three large negatives from this April 3, 1957 performance in Ottawa, Canada. These large negatives are most likely duplicates created for newsroom use yet confirmation of when they were produced is near impossible. The group is accompanied by modern 8 x 10 prints of the images. The negatives each measure 10 by 8 inches (25.4 x 20.32 cm) and are accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The negatives present with only minor scuffs and scratches. Near Mint condition.
