August 19, 1974 is the opening engagement of Elvis’ Summer Festival at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel. The show has been revised from previously and two songs by Olivia Newton John replace the more sentimental numbers. The familiar 2001: A Space Odyssey introduction is dropped as well as the medleys of past hits. Elvis was enthusiastic about the changes as was noted by the Hollywood Reporter’s review of the show that touted it as, “the best at least three years. [Presley] looks great, is singing better than he has in years, and was so comfortable with his show - almost all new songs - the packed Hilton showroom gave him several standing ovations.” Despite the positive reviews, the second night of the show returns to the original format. Offered from this unique performance is a stage-worn white scarf with blue facsimile signature that was given to a fan in the audience. The scarf comes with a letter from Sue Black that states, “Please allow this letter to serve as provenance for the following items: White Elvis Presley Concert Scarf with Blue Signature, August 1974 Opening Night Personal Invitation, Souvenir Photo Folio, 8x10 Souvenir Photo, Yellow Elvis Pin. In the 1970’s I dated a Gentleman that was friends with some of Elvis Presley’s Inner Circle. He took me to Las Vegas numerous times to see Elvis Presley at his Las Vegas Hilton Engagements. I received many scarves directly from Elvis Presley including the one referenced above.” This white scarf, with dark blue facsimile signature and rounded edges, acquired that unusual opening night, measures 33 1/2 by 34 inches (85.09 x 86.36 cm). Also included with the scarf is:

  • An opening night Summer Festival invitation, measuring 11 by 8 1/2 inches (27.94 x 21.59 cm);
  • A special concert photo folio, measuring 11 by 11 inches (27.94 x 27.94 cm);
  • A souvenir photo, measuring 10 by 8 inches (25.4 x 20.32 cm);
  • A 1974 pocket calendar card, measuring 4 by 2 1/4 inches (10.16 x 5.71 cm); and
  • An “Elvis We Love You” yellow bend-top button, measuring 2 inches (5.08 cm) in diameter.

This collection from that 1974 Summer Festival opening night is everything a special concert-going fan would have hoped to take home. The group is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The scarf is creased from being stored folded and exhibits spots of soiling in quadrant with the facsimile signature. The calendar card, button, invitation and photo folio, with minor edge wear, are in excellent condition overall.
