While Elvis was a style-maker in his own right, setting fashion trends throughout the decades, one particular trend in the 1960s was not one that Elvis frequently sported - the “hippie” movement. This period was one of counterculture that originated on college campuses around the US and its mission was a rejection of the social mores of mainstream American culture. The fundamental beliefs focused on harmony with nature, communal living, artistic experimentation and the recreational use of psychotropic drugs. This movement is easily recognized by its fashion which trended towards tie-dye fabrics, recycled clothing, folklore motifs, and vast exposure of natural skin. While Elvis was mainly focused on his fun-campy films during this period, his fans were found participating in every sort of lifestyle. Offered is a “hippie” hat signed for a fan by Elvis outside his Beverly Hills home. Elvis would often greet fans and sign autographs at the gates of his home at 1174 Hillcrest Drive in the posh Trousdale Estates neighborhood of Beverly Hills. The hat comes with two letters from Jan Swintek, both dated 12-11-06. One letter features a large image of the hat and states, “This is the suede floppy hat with Elvis’ signature on the top of it, That Elvis Presley signed in front of his house in Beverly Hills in 1966 or 67. It has faded quite a bit, but you can still make it out. I was on vacation there. We decided to go past the ‘Stars’ homes, as the girl that was with us was an Elvis freak. When we got to his home there were fans standing outside the gate, they said they knew He was due home any time. Within 20 minutes the car drove up, the gates opened they drove in, and the gates closed. Within 2 minutes that gates re-opened and Elvis and his body guards came out to the street. That’s how I got my hat signed as I didn’t have anything else to write on.” The second typed letter recounts the same story. The interior of the suede hat is stamped “Mexico” with a braided suede band ending in suede tassels. This funky, yet fun signed hat measures 13 inches (33.02 cm) in diameter from brim to brim and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The hat is well-loved and worn with surface soiling around the brim. The signature has faded but is still clearly visible and overall the hat is in excellent condition.
