While Elvis rose to fame with his singing and acting, it was his fashion sense and pompadour coif that set him apart from other celebrities of the time. His boyish good looks, combined with his homeboy charm, allowed him to push the envelope in the style of his appearance. Over the years and with many different styles, Elvis remained at the forefront, usually defining the style of the season with male fans copying his cutting edge looks in hopes of drawing the kind of attention from the ladies to which Elvis was so accustomed. Elvis used a variety of styles over the years, from his Army look to his rockabilly stylings with ample gel and spray to his longer duck-tail style for a more bad-boy appearance. Elvis was also no stranger to hair dyes and beyond going blonde for his duel-role in Kissin Cousins, he often had his hair dyed to maintain that jet black color. And just as fans would adopt his style, he would raise the bar and take it up a notch by mixing it up with a new style once again. Typically Elvis would have his hairstylists—Larry Geller on the West Coast and Homer Gilleland in Memphis—create his iconic coiffures, but at times, he too would style his own hair. Offered is a black hairdryer used by Elvis and given to Sonny West when it stopped working. The hairdryer comes with a certificate from Mike Moon that is also signed by Sonny West and dated, October 23, 1981 that states, “Elvis owned this black hairdryer while living at 144 Monovale, Bev. Hills, Calif. His bathroom in this house was also black. When it burnt out in 1972, Elvis was going to throw it away, sending someone to buy a new one. Sonny told Elvis it could be fixed so Elvis gave it to him.” This hairdryer that helped to coif the King, which measures a length of 9 inches (22.86 cm), a width of 9 inches (22.86 cm) and a depth of 3 1/2 inches (8.89 cm), is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.
