In September of 1956, Elvis had just finished filming Love Me Tender in Hollywood and flew home to Memphis under the alias Clint Reno with his friend Nick Adams. The Colonel and Tom Diskin, well aware of the attention his new star would attract, told the press that no pictures were to be taken at the Presley home: “I am sure you can appreciate the need for this action nor would you want to impose on their friendship.” Yet this instruction may not have been followed to the letter by everyone as the proof sheet of images of Elvis at his Audubon home would indicate. These impromptu shots of a shirtless Elvis toying with a rifle, perhaps still channeling his recent character, appear to be taken not by the press but by someone close enough to Elvis to catch him in this more intimate setting and playful moment. Two frames show Elvis leaning over the fence as fans are excitedly gazing at this shirtless wonder. The remaining ten images, shot by someone that is relaxing with Elvis, have Elvis holding, cleaning and aiming the rifle. The medium-format negative, black-and-white contact sheet of twelve (12) images, each featuring Elvis, shows a casual, relaxed side of this superstar. The proof sheet measures 10 by 8 inches (25.4 x 20.32 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The proof sheet has a staple hole on the upper left edge and a minor area of paper loss on the upper right edge. The edges are slightly worn and the left upper corner is slightly creased, otherwise the proof sheet is in excellent condition overall.
