In October 1954, Carl Perkins began recording with Sun Studios and on January 1, 1956 released the smash hit “Blue Suede Shoes,” which reached number 1 on the Billboard country music chart and topped at number 2 on Billboard’s pop chart. The reverse of the single contained the song recorded in December 1955, “Honey Don’t.” It was Carl Perkins and the popularity of “Blue Suede Shoes” that launched Sun Records into the national spotlight. Carl became well known for his rockabilly sound and is recognized as one of the founding fathers of rock ‘n’ roll along with Elvis Presley, with whom he was friends. On January 30th of that same year Elvis recorded a cover of “Blue Suede Shoes,” but didn’t release his version while Carl Perkins’ was still topping the charts. On March 17th however, Elvis sang “Blue Suede Shoes” and “Heartbreak Hotel” to a national audience on the Dorsey Brothers’ Stage Show in New York. Following the chart-topping hit, Sam Phillips gave Carl a new Cadillac as a reward for being the first Sun artist to sell a million copies. Later that year, on December 4, 1956, Carl Perkins and Elvis, along with Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash, got together for an impromptu jam session at Sun Records that became famously known as the Million Dollar Quartet.

Offered are the handwritten lyrics for Carl Perkins’ “Honey Don’t” (later recorded by The Beatles and a plethora of other artists) that was on side B of the single release for “Blue Suede Shoes” as Sun #234. The lyrics as handwritten by Carl Perkins relay a plea to a significant not to lead him on with the words:

Well, how can you say you will
When you won’t
You tell me you do honey
When you don’t
Put your arms around me let me know how it feels
Now tell the truth, is love real
But uh-uh Honey Don’t

Well it’s sometimes I love you on a Saturday night
Sunday morning you don’t look right
You’ve been out honey painting the town
Uh huh Babe, you been slipping around
So uh uh Honey Don’t

Honey Don’t, Honey Don’t, Honey Don’t - Oh Honey Don’t
Say you will when you won’t Uh-ha Don’t

Well I love you baby an you ought to know
I like the way that you wear your clothes
Everything about you is so doggone sweet
You got that sand all over your feet
So uh-uh Honey Don’t

Repeat Chorus

The handwritten lyrics are signed “Written by Carl Perkins (March 15, 1955)” and are framed with a Sun Records 78 RPM single in a beautiful display. An incredible pairing from one of rockabilly’s most classic songs. The framed display measures 17 1/2 by 27 by 1 inch (44.45 x 68.58 x 2.54 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The lyric sheet is in excellent condition with no visible defects; the record is in excellent condition with minor surface scuffs and scratches; and the framed display is in excellent condition overall.
