The sling shot has a long history, and was most often used as a weapon before it became the favored tool of juvenile delinquents. Sling shots were often of homemade construction, although commercial examples were available in the early 20th Century. Commercial production became more predominant when in 1948 the Wham-O company was founded, named after its main product, the Wham-O sling shot. As sling shots gained in popularity and became a mainstream recreational activity, the National Slingshot Association was formed which organized clubs and competitions. Always a kid at heart and quite the jokester, Elvis and his entourage enjoyed jovial battles with their weapon of choice—the sling shot. Shirley Sumner Enoch attests to that fact in her accompanying letter, dated March 27, 2019, in which she states in part:

The long days of a tour, numerous schedules of rehearsals, and the demand of performing two/three shows every day, often gave way to toys. Like kids on the playground. With each and every tour, “Let the crazy games begin” would commence. That is why, if you were to search through various bags, luggage and carry-ons, of the crew, including Elvis, you would find water pistols, sling shots, noise makers, and various other gag toys that would entertain you and your play mates. You would chase one another on golf carts, play hide and seek. But for sure, jokes were continuously played on various crew members, and there was even a log made to keep count of the events of each tour, but it was a secret club.

Elvis always had his arsenal of toys and when the place and time allowed, he would often be the ring leader. Early after joining the Elvis show, the Stamps were initiated into the games at the hotel with an impromptu search and surrender slingshot game. Elvis, explaining to Mr. J.D., how it goes, and how best to be armed, soon realized Daddy came with nothing to defend himself. Elvis rattled around in his magic bag and presented his bass singer with this deadly wheapon [sic] of this slingshot. Assuring that when Elvis and J.D. entered enemy territory, they were armed and ready. Thank you for your interest in sharing a memory of Elvis and J.D. Sumner. Enjoy.

Elvis and his entourage enjoyed playing with this treasured sling shot during their own juvenile games and shenanigans. The sling shot measures 6 by 3 inches (15.24 x 7.62 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The slingshot presents with only mild wear. Near Mint condition.
