Nothing is more synonymous with the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll than his famous jumpsuits. Every fan remembers Elvis’ wonderfully spectacular variety of jumpsuits (nearly 100 different examples were made) by I.C. Costume Company designers Bill Belew and Gene Doucette. After designing the fabulously extraordinary jumpsuits for which Elvis became known, Bill Belew was in high demand, and subsequently Gene Doucette took a more active role in studding the jumpsuits with the elaborate stone and bejeweled designs. While the jumpsuit designs were flamboyantly spectacular, Bill Belew credited Elvis by remarking, “You could be daring as a designer and put anything on Elvis and he could make it work. The simplest outfits that didn’t seem particularly remarkable on the rack transformed into something spectacular when Elvis put them on. He was that beautiful and powerful a presence.” While Gene concentrated on the embroidery designs, he also sketched out the visions for the full jumpsuits and offered is an original concept drawing for Elvis’ “Blast” jumpsuit, which is more commonly referred to as the “Orange Sunburst.” The jumpsuit also goes by the monikers “Sunlight” jumpsuit or “Raised on Rock” jumpsuit because Elvis is featured wearing this jumpsuit on the cover of his 1973 Raised on Rock album. This jumpsuit was first worn by Elvis during his Las Vegas engagement in January/February 1973.

On the cardboard backing of the frame has been handwritten, “Bought from ‘Gene Doucette’ 6/96. Original artwork for the Flame jumpsuit ‘Blast.’ This artwork was sent to Elvis for his approval. Gene worked for Bill Belew, Ca. and Doucette made most of Elvis artwork for jumpsuits. The artwork is original.” The remainder of the inscription provides further contact details for Gary Williams (who wrote the notation) and Gene Doucette. This original artwork presents spectacular insight into the minds of these talented designers with its stylish design. The concept drawing, signed by Gene Doucette in the lower right also with handwritten notations next to the drawing, measures 21 1/2 by 17 1/2 inches (54.61 x 44.45 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The artwork presents with few defects and only minor toning and discoloration. Near Mint condition.
