Elvis: That’s the Way It Is is the documentary film that chronicled Elvis’ summer festival in Las Vegas during August 1970. The movie was Elvis’ first non-acting role since the beginning of his film career in 1956, and reveals the musician’s renewed focus on his live performances. The MGM crew, directed by Denis Sanders, filmed Elvis’ performances on August 10, 11, 12 and 13, 1970. Parts of the documentary show him relaxing in his hotel suite with various members of his entourage, footage of fans offering commentary about what Elvis means to them, as well as coverage capturing the arrival of celebrities for the opening night of the show, including Sammy Davis, Jr., Cary Grant, George Hamilton, and Juliet Prowse. During this period of Elvis’ return to musical performances, the Colonel sought to capitalize on this shift by employing a plethora of marketing materials and gimmicks, each of which would bear Elvis’ likeness or name, to keep him in the forefront of the minds of fans. One such accoutrement was a Styrofoam “boater-style” hat with a bright paper band that was hard to miss when worn by ushers and sales people at the concerts. The offered example, sporting a brown band that reads “Elvis Summer Festival Elvis / RCA,” is the type that can be seen on ushers in the film Elvis: That’s the Way It Is during this 1970s Summer Festival when the movie was filmed. The hat retains the two original strings on the interior and the maker’s stamp “J Hats / Scranton Penn / Made in USA.” The hat measures 6 1/4 by 8 inches (15.87 x 20.32 cm) on the interior and 4 inches (10.16 cm) in height and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The hat presents intact with some stains and toning to the paper band. Excellent condition.
