John O’Grady referred to himself as “Hollywood’s No. 1 Private Eye” in his 1974 autobiography published by J.P. Tarcher, Los Angeles entitled O’Grady: The Life and Times of Hollywood’s No. 1 Private Eye in which he recounts details from his investigations in the 1960s and ’70s during his time on the Hollywood narcotics detail with the Los Angeles Police Department. John O’Grady’s career also included working as the bodyguard for Deep Throat star Linda Lovelace and helping Elvis win his paternity suit with Patricia Parker in 1970. A friend of Elvis and later Linda Thompson, John also assisted Elvis by approaching Red, Sonny and Dave to try and smooth relations after their dismissal in an attempt to discourage them from writing a tell-all book. As a result of their relationship, John gifted the offered pair of books to Elvis and Linda. The first, his own autobiography with original dustjacket, is signed and inscribed on the front endpaper “To Linda / A real live Xmas Tree./ I wish I were Santa Claus.” The second book is entitled Target Blue: An Insider’s View Of The N.Y.P.D. by Robert Daley, Published by Delacorte Press, New York in 1973. The book retains the original dustjacket and the front endpaper is signed and inscribed “Elvis / Read this - Great Book / O’Grady.” Also attached by paperclip to this front endpaper is John O’Grady’s business card. Elvis was obviously taken enough with John’s book to read it during a live performance, as images of Elvis reading O’Grady: The Life and Times of Hollywood’s No. 1 Private Eye on stage during a concert are available online. In the image, Elvis, wearing his Black Spanish Flower jumpsuit (with red stones), is holding a microphone in one hand and John’s book in the other. Elvis wore this jumpsuit during his 1974 August/September engagement, making the timing of his live reading right in line with the printing and distribution of the book. The book by John O’Grady measures 9 1/4 by 6 1/2 by 1 inch (23.49 x 16.51 x 2.54 cm), the book by Robert Daley measures 9 1/4 by 6 1/4 by 1 3/4 inches (23.49 x 15.87 x 4.44 cm) and the pair are accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

John O'Grady's book is in excellent condition with only minor wear to the edges of the dust jacket; the book by Robert Daley is also in very good condition with some feathered debris stuck onto the cover and the dust jacket exhibits wear, creases, folds and some minor tears along the edges.
