Elvis’ 34th album, simply entitled Elvis, was released by RCA in November 1968. The recordings took place from June 20 to 23 in Hollywood and from June 27 and 29 at NBC Studios in Burbank. Between these recording dates on June 25, 1968, Elvis attended a press conference to announce the NBC “Singer Elvis TV Special” to air on December 3, 1968. When asked by reporters why he was doing a television special now, Elvis responded, “We figured it was about time. Besides, I figured I’d better do it now before I got too old.” Fans eagerly responded with more than 40% of the American viewing audience watching the special, giving NBC its biggest ratings victory of the year. The show was ranked as the highest-rated TV special of 1968. Offered is a collection from this special television event sponsored by Singer Corporation that includes:

  • A Singer promotional card with an ad for the “Touch & Sew Deluxe Zig-Zag Sewing Machine” on the reverse; produced to promote the two separate television broadcasts of Elvis Presley “In his first TV SPECIAL,” measuring 3 by 6 inches (7.62 x 15.24 cm);
  • A Nov. 30-Dec. 6, 1968 TV Guide with Ann-Margret on the cover that features an interior black-and-white advertising spread for the Singer special presenting Elvis, measuring 7 1/2 by 5 inches (19.05 x 12.7 cm);
  • A brochure promoting the TV special featuring Elvis in his gold lamé suit and a holiday greeting with an image of the Colonel and Elvis on the reverse, measuring 9 by 4 inches (22.86 x 10.16 cm);
  • A postcard capturing Elvis clad in black leather on the front and an ad for the special on the reverse, measuring 5 1/2 by 3 1/2 inches (13.97 x 8.89 cm);
  • A facsimile-signed, color promo photo with Elvis’ RCA catalogs for various formats on the reverse, measuring 10 by 8 inches (25.4 x 20.32 cm);
  • A black-and-white photo labeled “TV KEY NOTE 12/3/68 Elvis Presley” in the lower left which captures Elvis playing his guitar flat on his lap, measuring 10 by 8 inches (25.4 x 20.32 cm);
  • A two-page color magazine advertising spread for Singer products and the TV special, each page stored folded in half, measuring 13 1/2 by 10 1/2 inches (34.29 x 26.67 cm); and
  • A black-and-white full-page newspaper advertisement for the TV special, stored folded in quarters, measuring 19 1/2 by 13 1/2 inches (49.53 x 34.29 cm).

This collection is an excellent representation of Singer’s sponsorship involvement and its extensive advertising campaign for the “’68 Comeback Special.” The grouping of eight (8) pieces is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.
