Air travel cards were designed to make the billing of travel more efficient, and given the volume of travel that celebrities like Elvis Presley and his entourage would undertake, travel cards were an essential tool. The offered Air Travel Card International in the names of Elvis Presley and H M Gilleland is card number 1001 52997 010028. On the reverse, the card is unsigned and is marked “Sponsored by Air Traffic Conference of America and International Air Transport Association.” The card was likely intended to be used as a form of payment for airline travel so that travel expenses would appear on a single bill. Homer “Gil” Gilleland had a long relationship with Elvis as his hairdresser and friend. The partnership began in 1955 when Gil was hairstylist to Elvis’ mother Gladys and continued through Gil’s 20-year career doing Elvis’ hair at Graceland, on movie sets, on his plane or anywhere else he needed to make the King’s hair look perfect. During Elvis’ career, it was nothing for him to pick up the phone and ask Gil to hop on a plane to come to Graceland, Hollywood, Las Vegas, or wherever he might be to do Elvis’ hair, making this travel card a convenient way to arrange air travel. This particular card, with an expiration date of 10-77, is not signed and was likely not used. A novel idea for a jet-setting crowd. The card measures approximately 2 1/8 by 3 1/2 inches (5.39 x 8.89 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the 1999 Graceland Archives Auction (Lot C221) and a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The travel card is in excellent condition overall with little wear. The card exhibits minor scratches and no signature to signature strip on the reverse.
