Elvis started 1973 in Hawaii for the famous “Aloha From Hawaii” concert. He followed up with performances in Las Vegas, an April tour, Lake Tahoe in May and was then back on the road in June and July for 17 shows over 14 days, beginning on June 20 in Mobile, Alabama and finishing on July 3, 1973 in Atlanta, Georgia. Throughout this summer tour, Elvis worked his way up to a crescendo. On July 2nd, he appeared in front of an audience of more than 15,000 in Oklahoma City in his American Eagle jumpsuit and on July 3rd in the Egyptian Pharaoh jumpsuit in Atlanta for what is known among fans as his best show of the tour. His July 1 concerts at the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville were no less memorable as described in the Nashville Banner: “Presley seemed to feel each drum and guitar beat with a body shake he’s seemingly perfected over the years. Each movement was accentuated by his outfit, so the girls say, which can best be described as a white flare bottomed, form fitted suit heavily encrusted with multicolored studs. As usual, he wore a high collar shirt with a white scarf.” While security was reluctant to let any fans close enough to the stage to obtain one of these iconic scarves, Gail Rose, who accompanied Dr. Nick to the show, was one of the fortunate recipients. She recounts in her letter dated 9/20/2018, a copy of which accompanies the scarf, “I had the privilege of knowing Elvis Presley thru my relationship with Dr. George Nichopoulos. Dr. Nick was Elvis’ personal doctor and accompanied him on tour. I was able to go with Dr. Nick on those tours and in Las Vegas at the Hilton. The 3 sided hemmed white scarf was given to me by Elvis Presley backstage at the July 1, 1973 concert in Nashville TN. I drove from Memphis to Nashville to join up with Dr. Nick and went back stage to see Elvis.” The white “interim” scarf comes with a collection of concert treasures that includes:

  • Ticket stub Sunday, July 1, 1973 3:00 p.m. for Row 2, Sec R3, Seat 4, measuring 1 3/8 by 2 3/16 inches (3.49 x 5.55 cm);
  • Plastic Elvis pinback button made by Anabad Corp in 1973, measuring 3 3/16 inches in diameter (8.09 cm); and
  • Special Photo Concert Edition Folio, measuring 14 by 7 inches (35.56 x 17.78 cm).

This early white silk scarf with squared corners, known as the “interim” scarf, was used for only about 7 months before Elvis switched to the polyester, non-signature scarves, making this example quite rare. The scarf measures 34 1/2 by 34 1/2 inches (87.63 x 87.63 cm) and the collection is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The ticket, button and photo folio are all in very good, aged condition overall. The scarf is in excellent condition with several small areas of surface soiling near the folds and creases overall; some minor discoloration near creases.
