International Business Machines, well known as IBM, began as a conglomerate of business transaction focused companies in 1911 that included data tabulating machine manufacturers. In the 1920s the firm became known as IBM and branched into the creation of electric typewriters and other office machines. It wasn’t until the 1960s that mainframe computers began to change the face of office systems so commonly used today. Before the advent of personal computers, typewriters were the standard tool for generating business, office, and in many cases, personal correspondence. Offered is an IBM brand Model C electric typewriter that was used in Elvis’ office at Graceland. The Model C was manufactured beginning in 1959 and with its bright red case, cushioned carriage return, carbon ribbon feed, electric ribbon rewind, decelerator mechanism for noise reduction, touch control system and other features, this model was the height of new innovation at the time. This bright red, vintage IBM electric typewriter comes with a handwritten note from Patsy Presley Geranen on “E.A.P” silver-embossed note paper dated “5/1/95” that reads, “This red IBM typewriter was the first new one purchased for the Elvis office at Graceland. It was brought [sic] in 1963 and used until 1973 until which time Uncle Vernon gave it to my father, Vester Presley.” With so much business and fan correspondence to attend to during that peak time in Elvis’ career, no doubt this typewriter saw a tremendous amount of use in Elvis’ office at Graceland. There is a receipt in the Graceland Archives that matches the serial number for this machine. This 1960s cutting-edge typewriter measures 16 by 14 by 8 inches (40.64 x 35.56 x 20.32 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The typewriter presents in working condition-it powers up and the keys and carriage move on command. Obviously the ink ribbon would have to be replaced. Does show signs of moderate to heavy use, which is expected. Excellent condition.
