In the summer of 1955, Elvis purchased a Martin D-28 from O.K. Houck Piano Company in Memphis. He had seen Hank Snow with a hand-tooled cover that he admired, so Elvis had one created for himself. However, because of Elvis' hard strumming style, this custom cover quickly saw heavy wear. In October or November of 1956, Elvis began using a J200 guitar and stopped using the Martin D-28 with the hand-tooled, custom leather cover. Offered is an early black-and-white photograph of Elvis holding his Martin D-28 with the custom tooled cover which dates the photo to sometime between June 1955 and Fall 1956. This exceptional 8 by 10 inch photo features Elvis, with his Martin D-28 and custom leather cover, standing next to a smiling couple at a house party. What young folks wouldn’t be smiling from ear to ear standing next to this handsome, charismatic, rising star? A great image of Elvis with an early custom piece that he had tailor made for his Martin D-28, a guitar he used very early in his career. The photo, with blank back, measures 8 by 10 inches (20.32 x 25.4 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The photograph is in excellent condition overall.
