On September 22, 1958, Elvis set sail for his 18-month Army assignment in Germany. Having just risen to superstardom, this impending, lengthy absence created a fear that the star’s popularity would fade during his time away. The Colonel launched an aggressive campaign to keep Elvis fresh in the minds of fans and the American public, and the beloved fans responded with their purses and their pens. Offered is such an example of a fan who wrote to Elvis while he was stationed in Germany. This pink-colored postal return receipt, dated May 22, 1959, from Jean Drew in Chicago, Illinois is signed in the upper right “Elvis Presley” in ink. The form is stamped with the arrival date of May 12, 1959 to Bad Nauheim. The package represented by this “return receipt” was sent by Jean Drew, Co-President of the “E.P. Continentals” Elvis Presley fan club from Chicago. The Drews were close with Elvis and visited Graceland on a number of occasions in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. This lot emanates from the Jean and Pam Drew collection. The signed return receipt card comes with a period 5 by 7 inch photo of Elvis signing autographs for fans near his home in Bad Nauheim and an original “E.P. Continentals” fan club membership card. The receipt measures 4 by 5 3/4 inches (10.16 x 14.60 cm), the photo measures 5 by 7 inches (12.7 x 17.78 cm) and the membership card measures 2 1/4 by 3 3/4 inches (5.71 x 9.52 cm). This trio of ephemera originating from the fan club co-president is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The membership card is lightly toned. Near Mint condition. The photo has tape on the reverse and one small tear at the top. Excellent condition. The receipt suffers from expected distresses due to shipping wear, with wrinkles and edge wear with a little paper loss. The autograph is unaffected by these areas of wear. Excellent condition.
