After graduating Humes High School, George Klein received a scholarship to Memphis State University, which he attended with pal Winston “Wink” Martindale. While George and Wink were pursuing their studies in 1957, Elvis was solidifying his career as both a musical powerhouse and movie star. This was also the year in which Elvis’ rising popularity and fame enabled him to purchase Graceland at the tender age of 22. Offered is a 1957 DeSoto yearbook from Memphis State University that features senior classmates George Klein and Wink Martindale and includes a picture of Elvis in the “Informals” section. The image of a young Elvis with Dewey Phillips and Judy Crainer describes the trio as signing cards for “University Status”—an initiative urging the Tennessee state legislature to classify Memphis State as a university rather than a college. This yearbook is marked on the interior end page with the owners name "Rimer Fletcher" in ink. The yearbook measures 12 1/4 by 9 1/4 by 1 inches (31.11 x 23.49 x 2.54 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.
The book presents with moderate cover wear to the front and back, and a bit more to the binding. The interior pages are better. Excellent condition.
