This grey and red padded hardcover The 1953 Senior Herald yearbook from Humes High School in Memphis, Tennessee, has been inscribed by Elvis near his photo on page 20 “Best of luck to a very cute girl” just above the listing of his major and activities. Elvis is depicted in his senior class portrait wearing a suit jacket and tie with a curl of hair falling onto his forehead. He has listed his major as “Shop, History, English” and his activities as “R.O.T.C., Biology Club, English Club, History Club, Speech Club.” George Klein has also inscribed the yearbook near his formal portrait on the Senior Officers page, “Best of everything. George.” This example belonged to Betty Jo Lloyd, as she has written her name inside the front and back covers and many of the inscriptions are dedicated to “Jo.” The yearbook is 112 pages and Elvis is also mentioned on page 30 in the class’ Last Will and Testament in Section 83: “Donald Williams, Raymond McCraig and Elvis Presley leave hoping there will be someone to take their places as ‘teachers’ pets.’” Elvis is also pictured on page 56, in the 5th period 12th grade English class photo, in the back row. Who would have guessed that the teacher’s pet of Humes High would go on to become a worldwide sensation and heartthrob only a few years later? The yearbook measures 11 by 8 inches (27.94 x 20.32 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

This well-loved yearbook of popular Jo Lloyd (given the plethora of inscriptions) appears heavily viewed as the binding and sewn page groups have come loose. There is a moderate area of paper loss on page 13 and the edge corners of the binding exhibit wear. The yearbook is in very good condition overall.
