Elvis had fallen in love with Hawaii at first sight and would often return throughout his career. On March 18, 1961 Elvis headed to Hawaii for the USS Arizona benefit concert he would perform on the 25th, and also to begin filming for his first Hawaiian-themed film, Blue Hawaii, which was released by Paramount Pictures later that year. Blue Hawaii would be the first of three Elvis movies filmed on location in Hawaii. Elvis perfected the formula that fans adored with his on-screen persona in this musical comedy. The movie reached number two on the Variety box office charts and was the 10th top-grossing film of 1961, earning over $5 million. The movie also received the fourth-place Laurel Award for Best Musical of 1961. Offered are three (3) 16mm reels containing the film Blue Hawaii encased in the original “Hollywood Film Co.” metal delivery case (that would have been used for storage and transport). Two of the reels are wound on a metal spool while the third is wound on a heavy gauge plastic spool. Each reel has the red film ends with “Blue Hawaii” handwritten in black marker on each and measures a diameter of 13 3/4 inches (34.92 cm). The heavy metal octagonal-shaped case has the markings “Mfg. By Hollywood Fil Co Hwd. Calif.” at the top and bottom of each side. The case has a clever locking mechanism that requires threading a metal tag through another to enable release and a metal handle at the top for carrying. The case also contains paper labels atop one another with the top eclipsing legibility of the bottom; however, the top label is missing part so that “MGM” is still visible. A second smaller, newer strip label reads “SCOPE / SR D / The Lake Street Screening Room / Filmteknik, Inc.” The case measures 15 1/4 by 15 1/4 by 6 1/4 inches (38.73 x 38.73 x 15.87 cm. These original film reels, featuring a movie that captures the Hawaiian Islands and the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll in their respective grandeur, are accompanied by a letter from Graceland Authenticated.

The film reels are all in very good, well-used condition and the case has seen heavy use with a dent on the side of the closure.
