The television special entitled Elvis that aired on NBC on December 3, 1968, is widely known as the “’68 Comeback Special,” as it was the launch of the next successful chapter in Elvis’ career. Recording of the album for the special took place in Hollywood, California, at Western Recorders and at NBC Studios in just six days during June 1968. Three different structures of set-up were employed: informal medleys with a small band in front of a live audience; Elvis and an orchestra for two ballads in front of a live audience; and production studio jamming. The album was released by RCA in November 1968 in advance of the NBC television broadcast. The record was issued in mono format, at a time when most albums and singles were released in stereo, simply because the producer was not able to get the appropriate sound equipment in time for the recordings. Two ballads from the album were released as singles. This was Elvis’ first live performance since his concert at the Bloch Arena in Hawaii in 1961. Once again the star reinvented himself to great acclaim and success. The Elvis (Original Soundtrack Recording from his NBC - TV Special) album was certified Gold in July 1969 by RIAA. The offered award was likely issued circa 1975 as the black matte floating version indicates. This style award was first employed in 1975, putting the date of issue for this example in that period. The plaque mounted beneath the gold record reads “Presented to ELVIS PRESLEY to commemorate the sale of more than 500,000 copies of the RCA RECORDS long-playing record album ‘ELVIS’.” This framed display features a gold-toned record above the gold-colored plaque with small image of the album cover, all mounted on a black background. The framed award measures 21 by 17 1/2 inches (53.34 x 44.45 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The award presents with several minor scuffs and scratches to the frame, with some minor loss of finish. Excellent to Mint condition.
