Elvis’ first live performance in New York City since the 1950s was at Madison Square Garden in June of 1972. It is considered one of his most significant events, along with his historic “Aloha in Hawaii” concert, because of the importance of the venue and the overwhelming success of the concert series, which had a fourth day added when the original three sold out immediately. Elvis performed two shows on June 10, 1972 which were recorded by RCA in preparation for the release of an album of the live show entitled Elvis: As Recorded at Madison Square Garden. RCA released the album just eight days after the performance and it achieved Gold status with the sale of over 500,000 only two months later, in August 1972. The album was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in May 1988, 2x Platinum in March 1992 and 3x Platinum in July 1999. Reaching million-selling status so quickly enabled the offered original white linen matte RIAA Gold record award to be issued to Elvis the same year of the album’s release in 1972. Gold discs were awarded by RIAA for album sales in excess of one million dollars from 1958 to 1974. This framed award displays a plaque, next to a small image of the album cover and mounted beneath the gold record, that reads “Presented to ELVIS PRESLEY to commemorate the sale of more than one million dollars worth of the RCA RECORDS long-playing record album ‘ELVIS AS RECORDED AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN,’” all set against a white linen matte background. This album, with the large number of songs and quality of the performance, rekindled the passion for Elvis among older fans and lit a fire for new followers that helped the album achieve acclaim. The framed award measures 21 1/2 by 17 1/2 inches (54.61 x 44.45 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The award shows only minor distresses to the frame. Near Mint condition.
