Released in 1969, “In the Ghetto” was an international hit, reaching number one in West Germany, Ireland, Norway, Australia and New Zealand and the top 10 in the U.S. and U.K. As a result of its worldwide popularity, Elvis included the song in his live performances at the International Hotel in Las Vegas. The song, about a boy born and raised in the ghetto of Chicago, was written by Mac Davis and originally titled “The Vicious Circle.” The song describes the rough life of the boy and how, just as he is killed, another child is born, implying that the vicious cycle of poverty and violence will continue. Elvis made the song famous in 1969 and the song hit number 3 in the U.S. charts and number 2 in the U.K. Only two months after its release, “In the Ghetto” was certified gold by RIAA for more than 1 million copies sold in the U.S. Between 1958 and 1974, gold discs were awarded for single unit sales in excess of one million. This framed display features a 45 single above a gold-colored plaque that reads “Presented to ELVIS PRESLEY to commemorate the sale of more than one million copies of the RCA RECORDS pop single record ‘IN THE GHETTO’.” This framed display features a gold-toned record above the gold-colored plaque, both mounted on a white background. The award measures 17 by 13 1/4 inches (43.18 x 33.66 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The frame has some small distresses and the canvas-style matting on the interior shows some small areas of what appears to be adhesive bleed-through. Excellent condition.
