March 24, 1958 was a time of worry and panic for young Elvis fans as he was inducted into the Army. Elvis himself was concerned about being out of the limelight for two years and despite efforts to stockpile material in advance of his departure, RCA had been left with very little with which to work to keep its star relevant. On March 21, 1958, just days before his departure, RCA released a compilation album of Elvis’ fourteen biggest-selling hits from 1956 and 1957 on one LP. Elvis’ Golden Records reached number three on the Billboard charts and has sold almost six million copies in the United States alone. The album was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on October 7, 1961 and achieved Platinum status in May 1988 and 5x Platinum on March 27, 1992. The offered original white linen matte RIAA gold record award was issued to Elvis shortly after achieving Gold status in 1961. Between 1958 and 1974, gold discs were awarded for album sales in excess of one million dollars. The framed award displays a plaque mounted beneath the gold record that reads, “Presented to ELVIS PRESLEY to commemorate the sale of more than one million dollars worth of the RCA RECORDS long-playing record album ‘ELVIS’ GOLDEN RECORDS.’” This framed display features a gold-toned record above the gold-colored plaque next to a small image of the album cover, all mounted on a white linen background. While the RIAA did certify the song in 1958, is currently understood that these white linen versions of the awards were first used in 1964. During his career Elvis paved the way with many firsts, and this album is a prime example as it is recognized as the first “Greatest Hits” album ever issued and was the first of five Elvis’ Golden Records volumes to be released. The framed award measures 21 1/2 by 17 1/2 inches (54.61 x 44.45 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The award shows only minor distresses to the frame and several small areas of staining to the matte areas. Excellent to Mint condition.
