Offered are two tougher variations of Elvis Presley’s second LP, Elvis, released in October 1956. The first contains an alternate take of the song “Old Shep,” the second track on Side 2, where Elvis sings two phrases with additional words added. Words in upper case are added in the alternative take: “As the years fast did roll, Old Shep he grew old AND his eyes were fast growing dim” and “He came to my side and he looked up at me, and HE laid his old head on my knee.” This variation of the record containing this alternate take was not identified until the early 1980s, remarkably, and the offered LP’s matrix numbers on Side 2 correlate with known examples of this rarity (Side 1 matrix numbers are not key, in this case): Side 2: “G2 WP7208 15S B1.” The Side 1 matrix number is “G2 WP7207 12S A1.” We confirmed the alternate track is indeed present on this copy. The other example in this lot is the rare “Hollywood pressing” that is missing “Camden, N.J.” in the legal type along the edge of the labels on both sides. The record’s matrix numbers match known examples of this rarity. Side 1: “G2 WP7207-13S” and Side 2: “G2 WP7207-18S.” Both sides also include the stamped “H” in the dead wax.

There is one slight variation on the backs of the very clean outer sleeves of these two records—the catalog number appears in two different positions. The “Old Shep” version has the number in the upper left, and the “Hollywood” pressing has the number right-justified above the album title. Both albums’ inner sleeves are missing. The discs measure 12 inches (30.48 cm) in diameter and are accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The “Old Shep” copy presents with a large scratch on both sides that does not affect playback. The sleeve is perfect but for two small pieces of tape at the upper corners and a “Gimbels” price tag on the reverse. VG+ condition. The “Hollywood” pressing presents with little to no defects to either the vinyl or the sleeve. The record shows NO SIGN of any use around the center hole. NM+ condition.
