From the Collection of Dixie Locke Emmons

Dixie and Elvis were like any normal young couple dating in the 1950s: their outings consisted of going to the movies, taking drives, going to the local canteen and visiting each other at their respective homes just to play games or sit on the front porch and chat. The two first met at the First Assembly of God church where Elvis would go to listen to the Blackwood Brothers Quartet. The charming black-and-white snapshot, emanating directly from Dixie’s personal collection, depicts her large family gathering on the lawn for the going-away party for her sister, who was moving to California to be married. Elvis is pictured in the front row with argyle socks and slicked back hair. The other people consist of Dixie and her parents, siblings, grandparents, aunt, uncles and lots of cousins. The front has a hand-drawn, black arrow pointing to a young girl being jokingly choked by the hooligan boy next to her and the hand-written inscription on the reverse may be describing this very moment: “The whole congregation at your party. The only time Deb & J.G. got that close not wind up fighting.” The picture seems to tell a bit of a different story if in fact those young rascals are Deb & J.G.! The photo is also notated in pencil with the date “6/54” which would have been just before Dixie left on that Florida vacation and Elvis’ career began heating up. The black-and-white original photo comes with a letter from Dixie Locke in which she recalls the picture dating from May 1954. The snapshot measures 3 3/8 by 3 3/16 inches (8.57 x 8.09 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The snapshot has creasing in the corners, signs of trimming to the side edges and discoloration to the reverse from age.
