In June 1968, Elvis recorded his 34th album, simply titled Elvis, in Hollywood at Radio Recorders and just a few days after on June 27 and 29, he performed the songs in front of a live audience at the NBC Studios. These sessions were recorded for the television special simply titled “Elvis” but popularly dubbed the “’68 Comeback Special,” which aired on NBC on December 3, 1968, shortly after RCA released the album in November 1968. The broadcast of this special was sponsored by the Singer Company and ranked as the top-rated television special of that year. As the sponsor, the Singer Company, which was known for its manufacturing of sewing machines, was prominently featured in all of the promotion and marketing materials for this television special, which was later credited for revitalizing Elvis’ career. Ephemera from this television special featuring the Singer name is highly desirable and the offered unusual poster, typical of the design theme with a handsome headshot of Elvis and red circular lettering against a bright yellow background, follows the branding for this special with its heraldic design and color scheme. Reports indicate that these posters were delivered as long, two-section posters that could be folded over to hang on a line strung across the store to show the poster in both directions. However, many store owners simply separated the two halves and hung up both posters. The offered example shows signs of this separation along the top edge, where it was either torn in two or cut into two separate posters. All that being said, this is one of the rarest promotional pieces related to the ’68 Comeback Special. The poster measures 13 1/4 by 10 5/8 inches (33.66 x 26.99 cm), is stored flat and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The poster exhibits mild fading, though the colors remain quite bright. There are also two small areas of paper separation, one of which has been reinforced with a small piece of duct tape on the reverse. There is a fold line across the center of the poster and several areas of tape residue on the reverse from mounting. Excellent condition.
