Elvis had a strong admiration for all things involving law enforcement, including firearms and weapons, which led him to acquire an impressive collection over the years. Understandably, Elvis was concerned with security, so it’s not surprising that both he and those close to him would carry weapons. Offered is a switchblade knife that was owned by Elvis and eventually gifted to his Uncle Vester. Automatic knives, better known as switchblade knives, date back to the 18th century and are a form of folding knife that can be opened automatically by a spring or trigger mechanism. By the end of the 18th century, the popularity of the switchblade knife was on the increase in the U.S. and garnered a solid following until the 1950s, when the weapon became synonymous with gangs and derelicts, prompting a bill to Congress to ban the manufacture of the switchblade. Many countries made switchblade knives over the years, and it was at the end of World War II in 1945 when American servicemen brought back the Italian stiletto switchblade, so named for its long slender blade that tapered to a point at the end. A favored Italian make was the Rizzuto Estileto Milano blade, and because of the demand for this switchblade, copies began being made in Japan, Korea and Taiwan. Given the popularity in the U.S. after the switchblade became illegal in 1958, many knockoffs were available in Mexico. This knife is one of those and despite being marked “Milano” on the blade, it was most likely made in Japan. This switchblade comes with a letter, on “E.A.P.” stationery, from Patsy Presley that states, “This Black and Stainless Steel Switchblade knife is one of Elvis’ personal knives. It was given to my father when Elvis passed away.” While the knockoff blades are easier to come by than the original Rizzuto Estileto Milano blade, this example is extraordinary for its provenance belonging personally to Elvis Presley himself. The knife measures 9 inches (22.86 cm), and the blade measures 4 inches (10.16 cm). It is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The knife presents in working condition, with both opening action and locking mechanisms in working order. The knife shows signs of moderate use, with several scratches and scuffs to both the blade and grip. Excellent to Mint condition.
