Created from the inner section of the animal skin to produce a textured surface, suede is more fragile than normal leather so it has always been considered a luxury, and became increasingly popular in the fashion industry in the late 1950s, ’60s and ’70s. Given Elvis’ penchant for fashion and his starring role in half a dozen Western films, it is only fitting that Elvis would have a blue suede Western style jacket. Western style garments were born of a necessity for rugged clothing capable of withstanding the harsh conditions of the frontier, and by the 1920s the Western culture became popular on the big screen. In the 1950s the style became high fashion and was often seen on movie stars. Elvis would take this trend to a new level by combining the style with a finer suede material that gave the illusion of denim while providing a more luxurious feel. This Western style jacket, owned by Elvis, has five snap front closures, two front breast pockets, snap cuffs and bright stitching along the seams. The shirt contains two labels: the first maker label states, “Silton California” with the size “L” indicated, and the second care label reads, “To retain its natural beauty, this garment should be dry cleaned by experienced suede and leather cleaner.”

The lined suede jacket is offered with a letter from Sonny West on TCB letterhead, dated June 9, 2011, that states in part, “This letter is to confirm the authenticity of a Blue Suede Jacket that was owned and worn by Elvis Presley. He gave this item to me in the early ’70s when he bought some new clothes which included new jackets for himself. I have seen several photos of me wearing it when with him, and I honestly believe I have seen at least one photo of him wearing it. He was always giving away clothes when he would buy new ones. It is dark blue with white stitching and metal snaps. It is in excellent condition even though it is over 35 years old.” The letter is signed by Sonny West. It was typical of Elvis to give items of clothing from his closet to members of his entourage, and Sonny was the beneficiary of such a bequest with this stylish blue suede jacket. The jacket measures 28 inches (71.12 cm) in length. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The jacket shows signs of heavy use, with wear in several areas. Excellent condition.
