Elvis often made the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles home when he was filming for Paramount, with one of his initial stays being in 1960 while filming G.I. Blues. In April of the following year, Elvis returned to Hollywood from Hawaii to continue filming Blue Hawaii. Offered is a bank check from the National Bank of Commerce in Memphis dated May 6, 1961 and made out to “Cash” for $100. The check is signed by “E.A. Presley” in dark black ink in the lower right and contains the handwritten check number “3” in the lower left. Elvis likely used this to obtain cash while he was away from Graceland, as suggested by one of several stamps on the reverse stating in part, “For Deposit Only - 4 - Beverly Wilshire Hotel, Inc. / Beverly Wilshire Hotel.” As was normal practice during that time, checks were more often used as payment than credit cards, and while Elvis later maintained bank accounts with printed checks, the offered bank check has the account number “14-3875,” against which the funds at the National Bank of Commerce in Memphis would be debited, handwritten at the bottom of the check. This was the number for the account that Elvis held at the National Bank of Commerce in Memphis and this same number would later appear typed onto a series of similar checks that Elvis used in the subsequent months of 1961 and into 1962. This early Elvis-signed National Bank of Commerce check measures 2 3/4 by 6 inches (6.98 x 15.24 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The check presents with expected wear from cancellations. Excellent condition.
