The offered Grand Prix-style sunglasses are yet one more gift Elvis chose to bestow upon his close confidant, karate instructor, bodyguard and friend Ed Parker. Ed and Elvis met in 1960 at a karate demonstration at the Beverly Wilshire hotel. The relationship lasted the rest of Elvis’ life with Ed becoming not only his karate instructor, but bodyguard in the 1970s and close friend. The two were often amused by the fact that they shared the same initials, and as such Elvis’ enjoyed giving Ed gifts with their shared initials. One such gift is the offered Grand Prix-style sunglasses with chrome frames, blue tinted lenses, TCB logos on both arms and the initials “EP” at the bridge. In Ed’s book Inside Elvis, an image of the glasses appears on page 129 and Ed recounts the circumstances of Elvis’ gift by stating, “When he presented the glasses, one silver with graduating blue tintied lenses and the other in gold with graduating brown lenses, he said sternly, 'Ed, what are your glasses doing here, take them with when you leave. they belong to you.' I was puzzled at the time and said 'What are your talking about, Elvis?' 'Can't you see your initials here on these glasses?' Though he made it seem like a joke, he was serious about my takin them. We spoke of our having the same ititials many times.”

This pair of iconic chrome sunglasses was customized by Optique Boutique for Elvis and comes with a letter from Jimmy Velvet on Elvis Presley Museum stationery which states, “This Silver pair of Grand Prix Sunglasses were the personal property of Elvis Presley. These Glasses were given to his close friend and American father of Karate, Master ED Parker. They were purchased from Master Parker’s wife by Jimmy Velvet President and founder of the Elvis Presley Museum." The Velvet letter describes the ornamental additions as being 14K gold, but they are not made of precious metals of any kind. The quintessential Elvis-style sunglasses, measuring 6 by 6 3/4 inches (15.24 x 17.15 cm), are accompanied by a signed copy of Ed Parker’s book and a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The chrome frames show signs of moderate to heavy wear from use and some fading fading. Excellent condition.
