The offered program, for Elvis Presley’s 1957 film Jailhouse Rock, is one of the more rare Elvis artifacts. Only a small number, perhaps less than 5 copies, have been seen, and the superior condition of this example sets it apart. These programs are thought to have been used at the Memphis premiere for the film, but could have also been employed at the Hollywood press premiere, which occurred a couple of weeks later. The film, which was one of Elvis’ most successful in earnings, reached number 3 on the Variety chart. This film was Elvis’ first for MGM and the third movie of his budding acting career. Production began in May of 1957 in Culver City, California, just two months after Elvis purchased Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee, and was completed by mid-June of that same year. The premiere for the film was shown on October 17, 1957, in the Loews State Theater in Memphis—the very theater where Elvis worked as a young man. A press premiere was held in Hollywood in November and the film was released nationally on November 8, 1957. Shortly after filming ended, Elvis’ co-star, Judy Taylor, died tragically in a car crash. Elvis was hit hard by the news; he did not attend the Memphis premiere, and it’s rumored that he never viewed the movie in its entirety as a result. The movie was re-released in March of 1960 to honor Elvis’ return from Army service. The offered program measures 11 by 8 1/2 inches (27.94 x 21.59 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The program presents with few if any defects. Near Mint condition.
