This paperback 1953 Senior Herald from Humes High School in Memphis, Tennessee, comes with the commencement program from the very year that both Elvis Presley and George Klein graduated high school. George was not only class president and editor of this Herald but also speaker at the graduation commencement ceremonies and friend to Elvis Presley. Elvis has listed next to his senior formal portrait, his major of “Shop, History, English” and his activities of “R.O.T.C, Biology Club, English Club, History Club, Speech Club.” The Class Last Will and Testament lists, “George Klein and Ken Hearn leave wishing they could take all the girls with them” while “Donald Williams, Raymond McCraig and Elvis Presley leave hoping there will be some one to take their places as ‘teachers’ pets.'" Later in the book we are reminded “at this time to not forget to invite you all out to the ‘Silver Horse’ on Onion Avenue to hear the singing hillbillies of the road. Elvis Presley, Albert Teague, Doris Wilburn, and Mary Ann Propst are doing a bit of picking and singing out that a-way.” George is pictured as Editor in the Herald and listed in the commencement program twice in addition to the list of graduates.

The commencement ceremony was held in Ellis Auditorium on June 3, 1953 at 8:00 p.m. Elvis is listed in both the Last Will and Testament and the Class Prophesy. This delicate copy of the 1953 Herald is perhaps the first foreshadowing of the musical destiny of Elvis Presley. This fragile copy belonged to Mena Jaslin as indicated by the handwritten name on the top of the title page. The Herald measures 10 1/2 by 7 3/4 by 1/4 inch (26.67 x 19.68 x 0.63 cm); the commencement exercise program, listing Elvis Aron Presley, measures 8 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches (21.59 x 13.97 cm). Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The Herald’s front page is separated (held by a single piece of tape) with a large water stain across the front and binding missing. Interior pages are in good condition and back cover is in similar fair condition to the front. The program is in delicate, fair condition with rips and tears along the edges, but still held together by one section.
