Elvis was the undisputed king of rock ‘n’ roll and also the king of bling. Elvis was known for his love of jewelry of all types and wore it as often as he gifted it to family, friends, and fans. His fondness for jewelry culminated in the 1970s when he adorned himself with jewels and ornamentation of all kinds in multiple varieties at any given time, as was the style of ’70s fashion. Perhaps the most widely known and recognized of Elvis’ accessories is the dazzling and dramatic “Ram’s Head Necklace,” which Elvis can be seen wearing in a plethora of photos from the period. The symbolism of the ram was likely well understood by Elvis, who was passionate in his spirituality and fascinated by a variety of beliefs and philosophies. Since ancient history, the ram has symbolized leadership and authority, action and determination, a perfect combination for a talent of his magnitude that changed the face of music and left an everlasting legacy.

In 1977, Elvis gifted the necklace he adored and wore often to his then fiancée, Ginger Alder. In the privacy of Graceland, as Elvis placed this magnificent token of opulence over the head of his own treasured betrothed, he proposed that she always wear it with black, likely so the splendor of the necklace would shine. This spectacular treasure comes with a letter from Ginger which states, “Elvis Presley loved jewelry and this piece is possibly the largest and one of the best known gold necklaces that Elvis owned and wore, as seen in various photos from the seventies. Elvis kept this necklace at his home Graceland and gave it to me, Ginger Alden, in 1977 while we stood inside the dressing area to his bathroom. As he placed it around my neck, Elvis said, ‘Always wear it with something black.’”

This lavish beauty of 14 karat yellow gold weighs an impressive 289 grams with 21 brilliant cut diamonds totaling almost 1.5 carats. The large ram’s head pendant has two cabochon-cut emerald eyes each measuring 3 mm and nine diamonds down the center of the ram’s head. The 24-inch (60.9 cm) large-ring chain is adorned on each side with two additional, smaller ram’s heads, each of which also contains two cabochon-cut emerald eyes each measuring 2.5 mm and six diamonds down the center of the head. Offered elsewhere in this auction are the matching ring and bracelet to the set with ram’s heads of the same size as those flanking either side of the pendant on the chain. Perhaps nothing is more symbolic of the king of bling than this stately and impressive necklace once cherished by Elvis enough to give to the person most important in his life at the time. The pendant measures 3 by 3 inches (7.63 x 7.62 cm) and the necklace is accompanied by several modern prints of images depicting Elvis wearing the necklace and a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The necklace shows only minor signs of wear and distresses. Excellent to Mint condition.
