Elvis began production of the film Jailhouse Rock in May of 1957 and by June 17 it was finished. The movie co-stars Judy Tyler and tells the tale of Vince Everett, a young man jailed for manslaughter who is taught to embrace the musical gift that becomes his redemption, leads to great success and ultimately almost becomes his downfall. Elvis performs a dance number to the title song, which is often cited as Presley’s greatest moment on screen. The movie was released by MGM in Memphis in October 1957 and then nationally in November to overall gross revenue of $4 million. The movie displays in full glory Elvis’ talents and skills as both an actor and musical performer at the beginning of his rise to super-stardom. He was not the only one beginning a budding career in show business, as his co-star Judy Tyler began acting as a teenager with regular appearances on Howdy Doody in the early 1950s. She grew to become a chorus girl before starring in her first leading role in the Rogers and Hammerstein musical Pipe Dream. She appeared on the cover of Life Magazine before starting her Hollywood career in 1957 in Bop Girl Goes Calypso and Jailhouse Rock. Her career was unfortunately cut short when she died tragically in an auto accident on July 3, 1957 in Rock River Wyoming when she was only 24 years old. Her life was sadly taken four months before the release of Jailhouse Rock. Elvis was heartbroken over his co-star’s death and told the Commercial Appeal that he didn’t think that he could watch the movie again.

Offered is a playbill for the Sam S. Shubert Theater production of Pipe Dream featuring an image of Judy on the cover that is signed and inscribed on the front cover “To Albert - Love + Kisses from Judy Tyler.” The inscription is large, bold and clear in a dark ink on the cover. According to the playbill, the play began the week of June 25, 1956. As a result of her early demise, Judy Tyler’s autograph is very scarce and extremely collectible as the hardest of Elvis’ co-stars’ autographs to acquire. The autographed playbill comes with a modern print of Judy Tyler and Elvis that measures 11 by 8 1/2 (27.94 x 21.59 cm). The playbill measures 9 by 6 1/2 inches (22.86 x 16.51 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The program is in near mint condition with only signs of normal discoloration from age. The inscription, although slightly faded, remains strong and bold.
