Elvis had a strong fascination with law enforcement and was always prodding the local Sheriff for a higher rank badge. Elvis was made a Special Deputy of Shelby County by Sheriff Roy Nixon in 1970. However, Shelby County was not the only Sheriff’s department badge that Elvis was after. On December 28, 1970, Elvis attended Sonny and June West’s wedding decked out in a black velvet jacket with his lion’s head necklace around his neck. After the wedding a reception was held at the church followed by a second reception hosted by Elvis at Graceland. The next day, after partying late into the morning hours after the wedding, Elvis and his group left for Lee County in several cars and arrived at Tupelo’s Lee County Sheriff’s Office where Elvis received another badge from Lee County Sheriff Bill Mitchell. Lee County Sheriff J.E. (“Bill”) Mitchell served from 1968 to 1972, and on December 29, 1970 he awarded Elvis a Lee County Chief Deputy Sheriff badge. The entourage in attendance also included Priscilla and Janelle McComb who snapped several photos of Elvis filling out paperwork, being fingerprinted, and receiving his badge that day at the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. Offered are twenty-two (22) snapshots of Elvis that December 29 day in 1970 at the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. While several of these photos have been circulated among collectors, many of these images have not been seen by the masses. There are eight (8) black-and-white and fourteen (14) color photographs. This group of period snapshots emanates from the Janelle McComb collection, and Janelle is pictured in two of the photos. Elvis is seen still wearing the same outfit from Sonny’s wedding the day before and at which the famous photo of himself and all the guys with their badges was taken. The photographs each measure 5 by 3 1/2 inches (12.7 x 8.89 cm) and the group is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The photos present with few if any distresses. Near Mint to Mint condition.
