The Presley brothers, Vernon and Vester, courted the Smith sisters, Gladys and Clette. Vernon married Gladys who gave birth to son Elvis, while Vester married Clette who had daughter Patsy. The union of one set of siblings to the other made Elvis and Patsy double first cousins. In typical Elvis style, he preferred to hire family for important roles in his personal life and career, so for many years Patsy was his secretary at Graceland while her father (Elvis’ uncle) Vester was a security guard at the gates of Graceland. Vester took on this significant role as gatekeeper and unofficial goodwill ambassador in 1957. Offered is Vester’s very own security badge identifying him as “Special Officer.” The official-style gold-colored, pinback badge comes with a letter from Patsy Presley on “E.A.P.”  letterhead, written on September 25, 1998 that reads in part, “This special officers badge belonged to my daddy. It was the first one Elvis gave him to wear as a security guard at Graceland. He wore it until he received his official Graceland Badge and uniforms.” This early relic originating from Elvis’ double-first cousin measures 2 1/2 by 1 1/2 inches (6.35 x 3.81 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The badge exhibits moderate wear from use. Excellent condition.
