On January 30, 1964, the Colonel purchases Franklin D. Roosevelt’s retired yacht, the Potomac, in Elvis’ name for the sum of $55,000 as a publicity stunt to donate to one of Elvis’ favorite charities, the March of Dimes. Upon their refusal of the gift, the Colonel finds another suitable recipient in St. Jude’s Hospital. Elvis arrives in Long Beach on February 14, 1964, the date the offered check was written, to present the Potomac to Danny Thomas, accepting on behalf of St. Jude’s. While in Los Angeles during this time period, Elvis would stay in his rented house at 525 Perugia Way. Elvis rented this house, where he later met the Beatles, from September 1960 to November 1961 and then again from January 1963 to 1965. The check, number 909, drawn from the “E.A. Presley” account at the National Bank of Commerce in Memphis, is made out to “Cash” in the amount of $100. The check is signed in blue ink “E.A. Presley” and is notated on the left margin in another hand, “House expense for Calif.” The reverse of the check has been endorsed by Lillian Jackson, who was the housekeeper and cook for Elvis at Perugia Way and was married to the butler of the house, Jimmy Jackson. Less than a week after this check was written, Vernon writes Joe Esposito in California to reprimand him for sloppy bookkeeping. Vernon kept a close eye on Elvis’ finances as he was always concerned about falling into financial ruin. Perhaps Vernon was not keen on a large sum of “cash” being withdrawn. A timely account of Elvis’ payments to the upkeep of his Los Angeles home. The check, measuring 2 by 8 1/4 inches (5.08 x 20.95 cm), is accompanied by a letter of authenticity by Graceland Authenticated.

The check exhibits expected stampings and cancellation, but no major defects. Near Mint condition.
February 14, 1964, Elvis Presley Signed Check – Signed “E.A. Presley”
