The original man cave, the Jungle Room at Graceland was a tribute to the bold styles of the 1970s with its green shag carpet, its stone waterfall and large tiki-inspired wood furnishings, reminiscent for Elvis of his fond memories of Hawaii. In this room, not only was Elvis the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, but King of the Jungle as well. It was place for Elvis to relax, gather with his entourage and the location of his last recording session. However, prior to the 1970s, the Jungle Room (never referred to as such, but only as the “den”), differed in decoration from the way fans know it today. The room was originally an outdoor patio of Graceland, and after returning from his Army service in Germany, Elvis undertook renovations that included fully enclosing this space as a den. In the 1960s the den contained two sectional couches and a massive television set; the flagstone waterfall was added just a year after enclosing the space. While an attractive addition, the waterfall proved to be a constant problem, as it was known to malfunction and often flood the area. The offered rocking chair was a favorite of Elvis’ in this earlier rendition of the room, and he would often relax seated in this regal rocker in his spare time. The chair is a precursor to Elvis’ design taste that would seed and grow into the Jungle Room in the following years. The chair was not pictured correctly in the 1999 catalog--another chair was mistakenly shown in its place. The dark wood chair with maroon vinyl upholstery, measuring 60 by 20 by 24 inches (152.4 x 50.8 x 60.96 cm), emanates from the 1999 Graceland Archives Auction (lot B196) and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the 1999 Graceland Archives auction and a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The chair shows expected signs of use in the seat and arms, and also exhibits a large cut in the leather on the upright area. There are several scratches, nicks and scuffs to the wooden areas. Excellent condition.
