Nick Adams, a young Hollywood actor who had a small role in Rebel Without A Cause with James Dean, was enlisted to overdub some of Dean’s lines in Giant after the star’s tragic death in 1955. It was at this time that Nick Adams developed a close relationship with James Dean’s Rebel Without A Cause co-star Natalie Wood. Nick then met Elvis on the Fox lot in Los Angeles in August of 1956 and the two became fast friends. Nick introduced Elvis to Natalie in September of 1956 and Natalie made a special trip to Memphis in October of that year to spend several days with Elvis and Nick riding motorcycles. Natalie and Elvis dated ever so briefly—theirs was a star-crossed love that was not meant to last. Yet at the time, given that Elvis was just breaking into Hollywood, the three friends were the focus of much publicity since each one had their own individual star status. However, this trio’s escapades were about as well known as they were short-lived. Offered is a check that was autographed on the reverse by each of the three stars, cementing the memory of their brief union for all eternity. The check is written to the Memphis Press-Scimitar in the amount of $1.30, likely for the subscription for Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Long, Jr. to the paper. The check, drawn on the First National Bank of Memphis, is dated August 27, 1958, thereby dating the acquisition of the signatures to after August 1958 and, given the varying inks, likely obtained at separate times. Elvis’ signature is in pencil on one side, Natalie Wood’s is in one shade of blue ink on the opposite end and the large Nick Adams signature appears in the middle in another shade of bold blue ink. The check measures 3 1/4 by 7 1/4 inches (8.25 x 17.78 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The check is in very good condition with discoloration from age and two vertical fold marks. The reverse side containing the signatures exhibits signs of tape residue on the two side edges that does not affect any of the signatures.
