From the Bill Porter Collection

Around 1770, the painter Thomas Gainsborough created one of his most famous portraits entitled “The Blue Boy,” thought to be Jonathan Buttall, son of a wealthy hardware merchant of the time. The painting depicts a confident young man bedecked in 17th century apparel of a bright blue hue, from his trousers and jacket to the bows on his shoes. The work, an inspiration for many artists, reproductions and memes of the subject over the years, currently resides at the Huntington Library in California. Perhaps it’s the light “Blue Nail” jumpsuit which Elvis is wearing as he passionately belts out a tune in this All Star promotional poster that beckons the comparison to Gainsborough’s Blue Boy, giving this promotional poster its moniker. Offered is an unusual example of this image that has been printed and then applied to canvas with a gloss finish coat (to give a painted appearance), and framed. While the paper “Blue Boy” souvenir poster is hard to acquire, this style affixed to canvas was likely created in a very small number by the Colonel with the conceivable intent to be used as the display at the souvenir stands. This rare example, emanating from Bill Porter’s personal collection, is encased in a wood frame that measures 29 3/8 by 23 1/4 by 1 1/2 inches (74.61 x 50.05 x 3.81 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

Three areas of color touch-ups on the front surface most likely repaired with a pen, varnish on surface has discolored slightly and back of frame has old tape around the edge that once held on the paper backing which is no longer there.
