There was perhaps nothing more exciting to a fan attending an Elvis concert than to be the recipient of a scarf from around the King’s neck. It was on August 2, 1976 in the Civic Center in Roanoke, Virginia that a fortunate fan received the offered scarf from Elvis. The Roanoke Times published rave reviews in the next morning’s paper describing Elvis as “…a good old boy having a good old time. Once again Elvis made his return to Roanoke like Haley’s comet on a regular cosmic schedule, brightening the skies as he blazed on stage” and “He has a charming insouciance about him - the easy assurance of a born entertainer. But he has more, too. There’s still something about a corny song like ‘Love Me Tender,’ or ‘You Ain’t Nothing But A Hound Dog,’ that makes the hair stand up in a crewcut. Some people say that the essence of a good performer makes the audience feel like he’s holding something back - like there’s a reserve of force there, something mysterious, that won’t ever quite be known. Something physical and faintly threatening - like a tornado. Brando has it. James Dean had it, Mick Jagger has it. And so does Elvis - and plenty of it.”

Offered is a white concert scarf from that evening in Roanoke. The scarf comes with a letter, dated April 10, 2018, from Randall Bransford, that recounts the circumstances of this special acquisition:

My wife and I were huge Elvis Presley fans and attended over twenty Elvis Presley Concerts. I was in the Air Force and we moved quite a bit and lived in various parts of the United States. Because of this we were able to see Elvis Presley in concert in many different states across the U.S.A. My wife Shirley was not shy and would always do whatever she had to in order to get a scarf and a kiss from Elvis and she succeeded many times. My wife passed away seven years ago and I am now in a rehabilitation facility and have decided to part with our treasured Elvis Presley items. Please let this letter certify that the following items were obtained by my wife and I from the Elvis Presley Concert in Roanoke, VA August 2, 1976. One white concert scarf with Elvis Presley printed in blue, worn by Elvis Presley and handed to my wife Shirley from the stage, Two original Elvis Presley Concert ticket Stubs, Twenty-six original snapshots and one 8x10 photo from the event, One original Elvis Presley Souvenir Folio Concert Edition Program, One original Elvis Presley Souvenir Concert Button.

This collection from that memorable night also includes:

  • Concert stub, Section 2, Row F, Seat 4 measuring 1 1/2 by 3 1/2 inches (3.81 x 8.89 cm);
  • Souvenir “Elvis / The Spirit of ‘76!” button measuring 2 1/8 inches (5.39 cm) in diameter;
  • Souvenir Concert Folio Volume Six measuring 11 by 8 1/2 inches (27.94 x 21.59 cm);
  • One color photo measuring 10 by 8 inches (25.4 x 20.32 cm);
  • Twenty-six (26) snapshots of the concert with 22 featuring Elvis, one image showing a white scarf being removed from his neck by a fan, each photo stamped “AUG 1976” on the reverse and measuring 5 by 3 1/2 inches (12.7 x 8.89 cm); and
  • Copy of a concert review “Performance Shows He’s Still a Star.”

This special white scarf, with dark blue facsimile signature and square edges, measures 34 by 34 inches (86.36 x 86.36 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The scarf, with creases from being stored folded, exhibits an area of surface soiling in the facsimile signature quadrant; the button exhibits signs of wear around the edges and tarnish on the reverse; the souvenir folio presents with minor wear at the edges; the photographs and tickets stub are in excellent condition overall.
