Elvis began karate lessons in 1958 while he was stationed in Germany, however it was in the 1970s that karate became an integral part of Elvis Presley’s life. This endeavor furthered the spirituality that Elvis sought in all aspects of his life. He avidly practiced its teachings and honed his skills over the years by training with Kenpo Master Ed Parker, Hank Slomanski and Kang Rhee. During Elvis’ study under Kang Rhee in the early ’70s, Elvis, with his karate name of Tiger, received his 7th degree black belt. It was in late February of 1973 that Elvis was in Vegas with Kang Rhee, who conducted lessons for Elvis right in his suite. By March 1, Elvis successfully achieved his 7th degree black belt and offered is the very card certificate issued to Elvis by Kang Rhee that first of March in 1973. This incredible card-sized, doubled-sided certificate given to Elvis Presley is dated March 1, 1973 and signed by Kang Rhee on the front for “Chil Dan” level black belt from the Pasaryu Karate Association. On the reverse, Kang Rhee has signed again as the approval signature, with Elvis Presley signing in slightly faded yet still bold black marker as member. Elvis’ fingerprints in black are clearly displayed on the back just above the agreement. “A clear mind, healthy body, and the ability to protect ourselves prepares us to make a better daily life and society. I pledge to abide by the rules set forth by this association. I also pledge never to use that which I have learned except in a case of extreme emergency.” That emergency had only just arrived two weeks prior on the evening of February 18, 1973, at Elvis’ midnight show when four men from Los Angeles rushed onto the stage in an apparent attack on Elvis. The men jumped onto the stage one at a time, each taking on a bodyguard while the last man approached Elvis. With a single karate kick, Elvis sent the man off the stage and into the audience. The four men were subdued and turned over to the uniformed security guards. Elvis had proved worthy of the karate certificate card he received shortly after the incident and stayed true to the testament he swore to uphold with his signature and fingerprints. This amazing relic is not only evidence of Elvis’ devotion to his craft, but also a treasured token containing both the King’s signature and fingerprints! The certificate card measures 2 3/8 by 3 1/2 inches (6.03 x 8.89 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The card presents with few defects, and only slight fading to the writing and signatures. Near Mint condition.
