Post second World War in the U.S. saw a push to make travel easier and more convenient for the masses and this charge was answered by railroads in the form of the rail travel card. This was a credit card issued by the Rail Travel Credit Agency based out of Chicago’s Union Station. By early 1947, the card was honored by 45 railroads and could also be used at some rental car agencies, hotels, motels, restaurants and even national park concessions. Early promotional materials touted that “This card will be honored by participating railroads for all rail and Pullman transportation (except commutation) and meals, and beverages where state laws permit.” The use and acceptance of the card expanded in the ’50s and into the ’60s. Offered is the rail travel card signed by and belonging to Elvis Presley. This card was likely used for train travel between concerts and recording sessions in the mid-1950s. The card presents with an absolutely beautiful “Elvis A. Presley” blue ink signature on the front of the card. Elvis rarely added the “A.” middle initial to his signature, unless he was signing a legal document. The card is accompanied by a letter from Thomas Morgan that states, in part, “The above mentioned ‘Railway Travel Card’ was issued to Elvis A. Presley as a matter of convenience. During his early tour day(s) [sic], Elvis had a fear of flying and often took the train while on concert tours. Arthur Hooten, one of the first friends of Elvis, took some of the tours with him. The card was used to make all purchases while traveling aboard the train. Elvis later gave this card to Arthur once he starded [sic] flying between tour locations. I acquired the card at an estate sale of his personal items that was held by his daughter.” The card is numbered “B-56682-1” and contains the original promotional verbiage on the reverse. This rail card, used by the King of rock ‘n’ Roll as he traversed the nation to perform for adoring fans, measures 2 1/2 by 3 1/2 inches (6.35 x 8.89 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The card presents with minimal expected wear from use, but remains very clean, with bold colors and a bold, blue ink signature. Near Mint condition.
