Whistling has been used as a form of communication for centuries and the instrument itself can be dated back to ancient Egypt when shells were used to create sound. In modern day, whistles are often thought of more as a children’s toy and the offered oversized novelty wooden whistle was created for just that. This solid walnut whistle retains its original labeling indicating its make by Benjor and its intent “If you want anything just whistle” with the front plaque. Always a kid at heart and quite the jokester, Elvis surely enjoyed playing with this oversized version. Shirley Sumner Enoch attests to that fact in her accompanying letter, dated July 19, 2018, in which she states in part:

The long days of a tour, numerous schedules of rehearsals, and the demand of performing two/three shows every day, often gave way to toys. Like kids on the playground. With each and every tour, “Let the crazy games begin” would commence. That is why, if you were to search through various bags, luggage and carry-ons, of the crew, including Elvis, you would find, water pistols, sling shots, noise makers, and various other gag toys that would entertain you and your play mates. You would chase one another on golf carts, play hide and seek. But for sure, jokes were continuously played on various crew members, and there was even a log made to keep count of the events of each tour, but it was a secret club. Birthdays were always celebrated, as if they never needed a reason to celebrate. “I remember being on the crew bus on one occasion, when one crew member, jumped up and declared, at around 2:00 AM, that Elvis had said “We can take the rest of the night off”. Elvis always had his arsenal of toys and when the plcs [sic] and time allowed he would often be the ring leader. It was at one birthday celebration for my Dad, Elvis came into the room, making all kinds of noise, with the large, wooden whistle, which he gifted to “Big Daddy” for the occasion. Fond memories go with many of these crazy items Elvis would give to my Dad. Thank you for your interest in sharing a memory of Elvis and J.D. Sumner.

The walnut whistle contains an eye at the top from which one could affix a string to hang the whistle. Whistles can be fun for all ages as Elvis and his entourage prove with this treasured relic from rehearsal shenanigans. The whistle measures 5 by 2 1/4 inches (12.7 x 5.71 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The whistle presents with few major defects-only a few scratches and scuffs mark the wooden body. Near Mint condition.
