Elvis was known for his voracious reading of spiritual and religious material. One of Elvis’ favorite books was The Impersonal Life by Joseph Benner. The Impersonal Life, first published in 1914 and also known as the “I AM” teaching, claims that the true spirit resides in every human being. This book about self-discovery and spirituality attracted Elvis to its message and he was known to give copies of this book to everyone. The offered copy, personally owned by Elvis, contains not only many underlined passages that he felt were important but throughout the interior are handwritten phrases near passages that obviously moved him to notate. This hardbound 34th edition from 1974 includes blue ink notations like “to do your will and my purpose,” “show me the way and I will follow,” “He is within us at all times He is always there,” “He has appeared, rejoice that new doors have been open,” “the road to seeking this knowledge never ends,” and “I will sing His praises for all to hear and to spread his message to those I can,” to quote just a few of the many handwritten phrases throughout the book.

This cherished copy was gifted by Elvis to his Aunt Delta and comes with a letter from Delta Biggs, dated March 1978 in which she states in part, “Elvis always read a lot. Of course his favorite book was the Bible. But he read all kinds of books about religion. Elvis would also always underline certain passages and write notes in the margins of all his books. This small black book with gold lettering on the cover called The Impersonal Life was one of Elvis8 [sic] favorite books. Elvis gave me this copy of his book in 1976. I have had this book since that time.” Copies of The Impersonal Life that Elvis gave to friends and family have been offered previously, but his own copy that he gifted to his Aunt Delta is absolutely extraordinary. The book, measuring 5 3/4 by 4 1/4 by 3/4 inches (14.60 x 10.79 x 1.90 cm), is accompanied by a letter from Greg Page and a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The book shows signs of being well loved and read with some minor spots of wear to the binding edges and spine and a spot on the front left center.
