Nuta Kotlyarenko, known as Nudie Cohn, was born in Kiev to a Jewish family. He moved to America at an early age and started his career making burlesque costumes for the showgirls in New York City. In the late 1940s he moved west to California and opened up shop to become the original rhinestone cowboy. His store was called “Nudie’s of Hollywood” and he began with flamboyant western-style suits covered with rhinestones and chain embroidered details that became known as “Nudie Suits.” The cowboy style was popular at the time and Nudie took it to a whole new level. Over the years, he became known as much for his dazzling suits and mismatched boots as he was for his eccentrically customized automobiles. His clients included Tex Williams, Hank Snow, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, John Wayne, John Lennon, Cher, Elton John and many more—including Elvis, for whom he designed the famous gold lamé suit. Offered is another gem from Nudie’s in this bohemian-style, jazzy brown suede jacket with incredible beaded fringe that was personally owned by Elvis. The iconic, well-worn label in the jacket reads “Nudie’s Rodeo Tailors / North Hollywood California.” The groovy jacket, with colorful lining, has two front pockets, toggle closures and various color beads on the long fringes surrounding the front and back yokes. The cuffs and jacket bottom have shorter, unbeaded fringe. The jacket comes with a typed letter on small blue paper that reads “A [sic] everyone know I am Elvis’ aunt. I lived at Graceland since 1967. Elvis asked me to move in here at that time. This brown suede coat with beads and fringe from Nudies California was a coat that Elvis owned and wore. Elvis gave me this coat with some other clothes to donate to the church. This was one of the things I kept because I liked it. Delta Biggs, 3764 Elvis Presley, Memphis, TN 38116.” The address is, of course, that of Graceland itself, where Delta lived for years beyond Elvis’ passing. This amazing jacket measures 33 inches (83.82 cm) from the collar to the bottom of the fringe and 22 inches (55.88 cm) across the chest and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The suede is remarkably supple for its age, but there are some areas of mild staining beneath the liner on the inside of the jacket. The collar label shows moderate to heavy wear. Near Mint condition.
