Always considered a luxury compared with leather, suede became increasingly popular in the fashion industry in the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s. While it is more fragile than normal leather, the textured surface, created from the inner section of skin, is softer and more supple, giving it an extravagant tactility. Elvis not only enjoyed wearing suede but he also sang about it in his 1956 hit “Blue Suede Shoes.” Over the years, Elvis owned several blue suede coats, some custom-made and others store-bought. Offered is an example of the latter which was owned by Elvis and later gifted to his cousin Harold Loyd. The jacket was purchased at Jackman of Las Vegas, a store from which Elvis enjoyed purchasing clothes. The dark blue suede jacket has a six-snap front closure, snap front breast pockets and red accent trim stitching around the front, pockets, collar and cuffs. The jacket has a “Jackman Original Las Vegas” collar tag and an additional care tag advising care by a leather specialist. This jazzy jacket comes with a typed and signed letter from Harold Loyd on TCB executive stationery that states, “My name is Harold Loyd. Elvis and I are first cousins. I worked the grounds of Graceland for as long as I can remember. I’ve had countless friendships with so many of Elvis’ fans over the years. Over the years Elvis gave me and my family many gifts. That was Elvis’ nature, he was a wonderful human being and never forgot where he came from and what he owed his fans. This dark blue suede jacket trimmed in red stitching and two front pockets was owned and worn by Elvis. Elvis bought this from a store in Las Vegas called Jackman. Elvis was cleaning out his closets one day as he often did and gave me a pile of clothes and told me to take what I wanted. Elvis did things like this all the time to family members and even fans.” This dapper suede jacket measures 32 inches (81.28 cm) in length and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The coat presents with signs of light use, with wear on one pocket and the sleeve interiors. Near Mint condition.
