Turquoise is an ancient gem that is thought to guarantee health, good fortune and protection from evil and has been used frequently by Native American tribes for various adornments. The word “turquoise” comes from the French word “turquois,” meaning “Turkish,” likely because the stone first arrived in Europe from Turkey. As turquoise rose in popularity in the 1970s, Elvis often had the stones embellishing his jumpsuits, belts and jewelry. Elvis enjoyed wearing the stone so its no surprise that he also gifted the offered ring to J.D. Sumner. Elvis maintained a special and close relationship with J.D. Sumner, the leader of the Stamps Quartet, Elvis’ backup singing group in the ’70s. J.D. Sumner was the recipient of Elvis generosity on many occasions, and this beautiful turquoise and sterling silver ring is a fine example. The ring with a floral motif and large turquoise center stone comes with a letter, dated March 18, 2016, from J.D. Sumner's daughter, Shirley Sumner Enoch, that reads in part "This unique Navajo Turquoise ring was personally owned and worn by Elvis Presley. It was later gifted to his friend and mentor, J.D. Sumner. The classic Native American vintage piece is made of sterling silver & consists of one large bright blue cabochon stone with black matri natural inclusioins in the rock, which enhances the beauty of this impressive ring. The gorgeous turquoise is inlaid in a silver beaded blossom, surrounded by a twisted silver band and topped off with two sterling leaves and one silver pod emerging from the blossom." The face of this striking ring measures 1 5/8 by 1 1/4 inches (4.13 x 3.18 cm) with a turquoise "speaker stone" measuring 25 x 16 mm, while the ring measures a size 6 and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The ring shows signs of moderate wear, but presents with few defects. Near Mint condition.
