Island style furniture is typically made of bamboo, rattan or wicker, natural elements that are ideal for indoor and outdoor use appealing to the island lifestyle. Elvis’ favorite islands were the Hawaiian and he visited for both pleasure and business often combining the two. He frequented the islands in the ’60s and ’70s for concerts, filming and family vacations. The Polynesian style became popular in the States in the early 1950s and ’60s as servicemen who had gotten a taste of the Pacific culture during the war were looking to recreate this relaxed and exotic lifestyle back home. It was not long after that fashion and trends in the U.S. saw a major shift. As with many furniture styles and designs, tastes tend to fluctuate over time and the wicker, rattan island-style furniture had a resurgence in the 1960s and ’70s as design in both home furnishings and clothing favored more natural materials, colors and patterns. It was during this period that bamboo, rattan and wicker made a comeback and Elvis’ jungle-themed room is a perfect example of the changing tastes of those decades. Elvis was always at the forefront of style both in his dress and in his home furnishings. The offered side table in the bamboo-style of furniture popular at the time once bedecked the rooms of Graceland as Elvis’ cousin, Harold Loyd, mentions in the accompanying notarized letter which states, “I, Harold Loyd, first cousin to Elvis Presley, hereby acknowledge that the table purchased by Ali Pointer on June 3, 1992 is authentic. The table was used in the Graceland household by Elvis Presley and Vernon and Gladys Presley.” This well-loved and used bamboo side table measures 22 by 25 by 13 inches (55.88 x 63.5 x 33.02 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The table is in well used condition with heavy ring staining on top and minor ring staining on lower shelf. The rattan strips are coming loose or missing around the base of the legs. The table top also exhibits dark spots from burning and heavy wearing on varnish. This table has seen a lot of heavy love and use.
