In 1972, Sam Thompson was a police officer in Memphis when his sister Linda, Miss Tennessee, began dating Elvis. The friendship was instant when Linda introduced Sam and Elvis, and as with most people close to Elvis, Sam become part of his world when after overseeing security for several tours he became Elvis’ personal bodyguard in 1976. It is well known that whenever Elvis would go through his closets, whomever was around would be the recipient of Elvis’ generosity and Sam was often in that prime position. The offered red silk shirt was gifted to Sam on a slightly different occasion which Sam's describes in his letter dated August 16, 1977. In this letter Sam states, "I knew Elvis Presley from November of 1972 until his death in August of 1977. I was his personal bodyguard and traveled with Elvis on concert tours. I witnessed many performances and was his friend and companion until the day he died. In late 1973, while visiting at the home he bought for me at 1317 Favell Drive, Elvis noticed that his shirt was torn. He sent an aide back to Graceland to get another shirt and left the torn shirt at my house. I kept it in my sole possession since htat date. The shirt is silk, red in color and has no label. It has double front flap pockets and still bears the torn place Elvis noticed. This shirt is now in the possession of Tom Morgan." The letter is signed in blue ink by Sam Thompson. This handsome red silk shirt with the small L-shaped rip at the front has a 7-button front closure with fabric panel covering the closure, two front pockets and a fabric locker loop on the reverse. The shirt also has a 2-button closure on each cuff and no interior tags. This snazzy shirt measures 32 1/3 inches (82.11 cm) from top of collar to bottom seam and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.

The shirt is in excellent condition overall with an L shaped rip at the second button.
